Statement from the Women’s Commission of the European Chess Union Regarding Recent Incident at Wijk aan Zee

Jan 29, 2025

The Women’s Commission of the European Chess Union is deeply concerned about the recent incident at the Wijk aan Zee chess tournament, where Uzbek player Nodirbek Yakuboev did not shake hands with Indian player Vaishali before their game. This action stands in clear violation of the principles that govern the game of chess, as well as established tournament regulations that promote respect, sportsmanship, and equality among all players, regardless of gender.

Chess is a game that thrives on mutual respect, and gestures such as the pre-game handshake are an integral part of maintaining the dignity and integrity of the sport. The failure to acknowledge such fundamental practices undermines the spirit of the game and, more importantly, disrespects the individual players involved.

We strongly believe that the international chess community, led by FIDE, must take immediate steps to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future. It is crucial that all players, especially female players, feel supported and respected in every tournament setting. The Women’s Commission stands firmly in support of all female chess players and is committed to fostering an environment where they can compete without fear of disrespect or discrimination.

We call upon FIDE to address this issue and reinforce the values of sportsmanship, respect, and inclusion within the chess world. Female players, like all athletes, deserve an environment where they are treated with dignity and fairness, and where their contributions to the game are celebrated and recognized.

Together, we can work to ensure that chess remains a welcoming and respectful space for all.
